Marvel’s upcoming film Blade has hit another snag, as director Yann Demange has exited the project, leaving the highly anticipated movie without a director once again. This marks the second time Blade has lost its director, following the departure of Bassam Tariq in 2022 over creative differences.
The Changing Directorial Helm
Yann Demange, known for his work on White Boy Rick and Lovecraft Country, joined the project after Bassam Tariq’s exit. However, his departure, reportedly amicable, leaves Marvel in search of a new filmmaker to steer the project. Despite this setback, work on the film continues with a release date still set for November 7, 2025.
A Storied Announcement
Blade was first announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. The reveal was marked by Mahershala Ali donning a Blade cap, signaling his role as the titular character. Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, approached Marvel with a vision for rebooting the franchise originally led by Wesley Snipes in the late 1990s.
Script in Progress
The script for Blade is currently being crafted by Eric Pearson, known for his work on The Fantastic Four. Despite the directorial changes, Ali remains optimistic. In a 2023 interview with EW, he expressed confidence in the direction the film is taking, stating, “I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that.”
